Das belegt das Allensbacher Elite-Panel für die Zeitschrift Capital. Rund 20 Mio. Deutsche sind Mitglied bei Facebook - die große Mehrheit der Top-Entscheider lässt somit lieber die Finger von sozialen Netzwerken im Internet.

Rund 70 Prozent nutzen weder Facebook noch andere Dienste wie Xing oder LinkedIn.

Kein reines Marketing-Instrument
In einer Welt der Sprachregelungen und Freigaben ist für einen offenen Schlagabtausch im Netz kein Platz. In einer Ökonomie des Teilens und der Aufmerksamkeit darf sich die sogenannte Elite dann allerdings nicht beschweren, wenn sie von den Netzbewohnern mit Nichtbeachtung bestraft wird, meinen Experten.

Der Wunsch nach direkter Kommunikation via Maschine könnte für die Wirtschaft jedoch hilfreich sein. Schließlich ist das Internet kein passiver Raum, der allein von hochspezialisierten Nerds und Suchmaschinen bewohnt wird.

Vielmehr ist das World Wide Web ein Ort, den jeder aktiv gestalten kann, argumentiert auch Helge David von der Kommunikationsagentur Text-Raum http://text-raum.de . Social Media sollte man allerdings nicht als reines Marketing-Instrument definieren, wie es die meisten Entscheider in Unternehmen tun, so der Fachmann.

So ließen sich keine Vertriebsstrategien nach Plan realisieren. Auch Kontrollfreaks würden nicht zum unberechenbaren Chaos des Netzes passen. Auch seien Gewinnspiele auf Facebook kein automatischer Erfolgsgarant.

In a digital world, there's new hope for analog telephone infrastructures

Many companies that have a functional analog telephone network with some special end devices are keen to benefit from Voice over IP in the business environment. However, they are not so keen on the costs and risks involved in making the switch. At CeBIT 2010, Patton-Inalp is using the SmartNode 4400 to demonstrate how this wish can be transformed smoothly into reality.

The system operates by adapting the analog connections (FXS) of the SmartNode 4400 to the relevant customer installation using 12, 16, 24 or 32 cables and two Ethernet ports. The analog FXS ports accept telephones, modems, fax machines and other analog equipment. Naturally, it is also fully compatible with the entire ISDN and analog SmartNode family.

The SmartNode 4400 opens up a whole range of opportunities for gaining a foothold in the world of digital telephony. For instance, it is possible to retain an existing telephone and fax infrastructure by linking the analog telephone system to an IP-PBX and installing IP phones only at selected workspaces.

An FDA that's a real all-rounder

The new FDA (Field Digital Assistant) unveiled by 4P Mobile Data Processing at CeBIT 2010 could prove to be the ultimate all-round device for employees of delivery companies. Although only the size of a PDA, it features virtually everything you could need or wish for when dealing with customers. In addition to all the functions of a PDA, the FDA can scan barcodes and RFIDs and process payments using smart cards. Naturally, this clever little machine also prints out receipts. What's more, it comes with a GPS and a camera. And, as if that weren't enough, it can also be used for e-mail, SMS and phone calls.

People who build websites need a lot of patience. A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes before the final result is available to view in your browser. However, that's all set to change thanks to the new content management system First Spirit 4.2 from e-Spirit AG - and it's on show at CeBIT 2010.

The Dortmund-based company has developed a high-end platform that combines extremely user-friendly new functions and interface concepts. The main feature is a live view integrated in the Java client. For the first time, this offers editors the opportunity to see a complete live view of the page they're working on. When saved, the page view is updated in real time. A colored border highlights the area in which the editor is working. Thanks to the ContentCruiser, paragraphs can now also be edited directly in the page preview. Another new feature is the Multi-Tabbing function that enables users to work on several elements in parallel, switching back and forth between them as required.

That's why, at CeBIT 2010, Home Health Products GmbH is presenting a new massage table that uses vibrations to alleviate the problem.

An enormous number of people suffer from back pain. As our skin contains millions of nerves that are connected to our internal organs, a massage can often help to ease the pain. In future, it will be possible to stimulate these nerves using the Andullation massage table (massage technique used to generate biological resonance). The high-tech table is fitted with eleven vibration units and features programs for the shoulders, neck, cervical spine, lumbar spine and foot reflex zones. Using infrared deep heat, this helps to remove blockages and alleviate poor circulation. In addition to stimulating the lipometabolism, the massage also tightens the tissues.

Automatic video analysis and search functions

If you want to create your own video archive, it usually means sitting down and taking notes as you trawl through all your video footage. However, at CeBIT 2010, researchers from Chemnitz University of Technology are presenting new technology that carries out the whole process automatically.

The technology developed by the media computing experts automatically indexes any piece of video footage by annotating it accordingly. These annotations range from general color values to extensive descriptions generated by the recognition of people, objects, scenes, script and language, for example.

The researchers have also developed a special search engine for searching through video collections that have already been archived using this system. When combined, these functions provide an ideal solution for archiving and searching large collections of video data.

USB "strongbox" keeps personal health files safe

The Med-O-Card may only be the size of a credit card, but it boasts a storage capacity of 16 gigabytes. The innovative health card is on show at CeBIT 2010.

The Med-O-Card is a high-security USB memory card based on Flash technology. It provides access to health-related data irrespective of location and hardware. It also gives patients, doctors, health insurance companies and insurance institutions a decentralized, secure and individualized storage option for personal health data. In addition to health data, the card can also be used to store other information, such as medicines prescribed, making the individual's medical history available at all times. What's more, blood group and other emergency information can also be stored on the card. The card system is based on the principle that the owner remains in charge of his or her own data. The card was developed in close collaboration with the medical community in Germany.

Multi-clause sentences are child's play for intelligent translator

Munich-based company Linguatec is presenting hands-on language technologies at CeBIT 2010. Its exhibits include the new generation of automatic translation technology. The innovative Personal Translator 14 comes complete with seven language pairs and corrects spelling errors while it translates.

Thanks to smart analysis, it can even translate complex multi-clause sentences and figures of speech accurately. According to the company, the technology is equally capable of dealing with ambiguous words where the meaning must be derived from the context. The integrated dictionaries boast an impressive 3.8 million entries. In addition, 25,000 blocks of text are also available for written correspondence in English. And what the Personal Translator 14 doesn't already know, it is simply able to learn.

The intelligent software registers corrections made by the user and applies these to future translations. If required, the user can also ask the translator to read out the text in order to iron out any mistakes in pronunciation. Linguatec says the program will generate time savings of around 40 percent, a claim supported by a study carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute.

Historical towns brought to life in 3D

Any attempt to paint a mental picture of historical towns is usually based on old maps, paintings and photos displayed in museums. All too often, our impressions of what they may have looked like remain entirely theoretical. In contrast, the 3D model of Saarlouis presented at CeBIT 2010 by scientists from Saarland University creates a realistic image of the town during the 17th century.

The researchers used old plans, sketches and copperplate engravings to reconstruct not only the dimensions of rows of houses and building elevations, but also the materials and colors used. Using this "real-life" 3D model, it is now possible to view entire streets and establish exactly how far the fortress town extended into the surrounding area. A range of other views also reveal where the town's modern-day buildings were erected over the old structures. Even more life will be breathed into the 3D model in the future with the addition of figures dressed in period clothing, controlled using agent systems. In addition to peopling the town, they will also guide their "visitors" through the streets. What's more, audiovisual information or historical written documents can be attached to the individual buildings and accessed by the virtual visitors with just a click of the mouse.

The simultaneous interpreter that fits in a briefcase

When automated speech recognition, automated translation and speech synthesis are combined, the result is an automated simultaneous interpreter, which researchers from the Anthropomatics Institute at Karlsruhe Technology Institute in Germany are presenting to the public at CeBIT 2010.

The simultaneous interpretation system, which can be used for lectures and parliamentary debates, recognizes and translates speech in real-time. The user can select to receive output as text on a laptop or via directional speakers. A new type of loudspeaker system that uses ultrasound can be used for this. The system directs a beam at specific listeners and those in the immediate vicinity are unable to hear the translation.

Everything you always wanted to know about the traffic reports on the radio

NDR will be showing visitors how traffic information is processed and distributed on the radio - from the incoming message to editorial processing and then the broadcast. The broadcaster will also be explaining about other distribution channels, such as TMC for satnav devices, Internet and DAB. Another special service is also available in Germany via the NDR traffic studio hotline: a personal message box for important information about specific travel routes. From the first day of the trade fair, listeners can simply set up a personal message box via their computer and then call the hotline at any time to receive traffic information about their personal route.

An American 1950s cabriolet will also be on the stand. Visitors can climb in and find out how TPEG can be used to easily and quickly call up nationwide German traffic reports, flight information, current information about public transportation and parking information while on the road. And visitors wishing to be caught on a speed camera without having to suffer any nasty consequences can take their personal speed trap photo home with them.

Playful immersion in 3D worlds

Computer games provide a good way of taking a break from everyday life. And NVIDIA will be demonstrating at CeBIT 2010 how 3D worlds can be made even more realistic on home computers with standard displays.

A pre-requisite is an LCD display with a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz and a computer with Windows Vista or 7. Internet and traditional postal services are brought closer together

The sending of letters could experience a renaissance in the 21st century thanks to so called hybrid mail. This term describes the combination of online communications and classic letters and refers to a letter that is not posted in a traditional post box but is still handled by the postal services. Visitors at CeBIT 2010 to the Frankotyp-Postalia (FP) stand have the chance to send such online letters from there.

The FP group is offering two such solutions: FP webmail can be used for individual letters. By downloading the software, users are granted access to a virtual printer; rather than the user printing out the letter, he or she sends it via the Internet to the FP printing center where it is processed, which means printing, franking, enveloping and transfer to a delivery service with the optimal postage charge. FP businessmail works in a similar way but offers further possibilities. For example, the customer can provide specific details about the processing of the letter and specify the use of company headed notepaper and/or envelopes.

This service allows the transfer of print data in a wide range of formats and all manner of sizes.

Google rolls into CeBIT 2010 with its "Street View" vehicles

Stroll along streets, do some window shopping, or take a look at a hotel. This is currently possible in 19 countries from the comfort of your own home with Google's Street View. The 360 degree photo service is also set to start in Germany in 2010. The company will be presenting its project at CeBIT 2010.

Internet giant Google is coming to Hannover with its Street View vehicles in order to showcase the cars with cameras on the roof. The vehicles have already been driving through the streets and lanes of Germany for months in order to collect photographic data for the map service, as Germany is set to become the 20th country in the world in which one can take a look around the streets at the click of a mouse, thanks to Google.

The company has compromised on certain points with regard to its launch in Germany: faces and car registration plates will be automatically made anonymous before the service is launched and original photos will be deleted from databases. Residents can also apply to have the view of their house removed from the Google service. Prior to the launch of the Street View service, the company will be available to provide information about the project at CeBIT 2010. Michael Jones, Google's Chief Technology Advocate, will be demonstrating, at 2 pm on 2 March in the Convention Center, how the service works and the opportunities it presents.

English lessons in a virtual mansion

English is globally the most important language. Fluent communication and perfect grammar are now a pre-requisite for many jobs. Koblenz-Landau University in Germany therefore presents a new English tuition program at CeBIT 2010, including playful animations, interactive communications channels and complex graphic elements.

Tingo Lingo is the name of the innovative program. A virtual tutor guides users through a fantasy villa called Grammar Mansion, in which the various furnishings represent grammar topics. There are 38 uniformly structured modules consisting of puzzles, grammar chapters and self-tests at various levels.

Before stepping into the mansion, participants first take an entrance test in order to determine their grammatical skills. The results of this test are then used to define individual learning goals. Flash animations illustrate complicated concepts and glossaries explain grammatical terms. Interactive communication with a tutor and other participants is also possible.

Practical ideas for connected homes

Is it possible to connect the kitchen, living room and fitness room in a practical way? The answer to this question is provided by the Connected Living association, which will be demonstrating practical solutions at CeBIT 2010. These go well beyond the well-known energy assistant systems that can help to use heating and lighting efficiently.

It will be shown at the association's stand how computers can be used to influence everyday processes, such as collecting data in the fitness room required to provide the basis for developing a training and nutrition program. The chef assistant monitors supplies in the refrigerator and provides a shopping list on the digital display when stocks begin to run low, as well as displaying recipes for the ingredients on the shopping list. When cooking, the stove, oven and microwave can easily be monitored from the television in the living room. The so called living lab has been put through its paces at Berlin Technical University and is intended to help test concepts and appliance technology in all manner of sectors for relevance to everyday tasks and user acceptance.

Open sesame: cell phones as house keys

Nowadays cellular phones are multi-functional devices that can be used for services as varied as paying at vending machines, surfing the Internet or listening to the radio. AT CeBIT 2010, the Wildau Technical University of Applied Sciences (Technische Hochschule Wildau) will be presenting a brand new function for this high-tech device - the cell phone as a house key.

With the aid of sophisticated technology, the cell phone displays relevant color coding and is able to send secure door opening signals. A smart feature of this house key is that, depending on its programming, it can enable permanent access to the residence or restrict it to a limited period. In addition, whenever access is gained, near field communication technology allows important information to be sent directly to the cell phone.

High speed powerline adapter

Up to 200 Mbits per second - that is currently the impressive data transmission speed provided by dLAN powerline connections. But this will only be classified as high performance until CeBIT 2010, as that is where devolo AG will be presenting the new dLAN generation.

The new high-tech adapters produced by the German manufacturer of powerline home networking solutions can transfer data at speeds of up to 500 Mbit per second. This new adapter can, for example, be simply connected to a computer and then plugged into a power socket in order to create a connection to other adapters or other network-compatible appliances in the home. The latest generation of dLAN adapters uses the new, Powerline Standard IEEE P1901 in order to achieve its high transfer speeds. Large bandwidths are also possible and allow, for example, four HDTV channels to be played in parallel on a home network.

This could be a big seller for the upcoming soccer World Cup. Aiptek International GmbH presents its MobileCinema D25 at CeBIT 2010. This is a real all-rounder in the world of mobile entertainment. At its core is a DVB-T-receiver that enlarges the TV picture using a projector to create an image size of approx. 75 inches.

According to manufacturer data, the LED projector used by the MobileCinema D25 creates a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and has a luminosity of 20 lumens. The image can be rotated through 270 degrees, thus allowing horizontal and vertical projections. The image format is 4:3. Cinemizer - the 3D cinema right in front of your eyes

Reading or watching the countryside go by on long train journeys is a thing of the past - this and other similar situations now offer the chance to enjoy a good film in 3D. That is, if one is the proud owner of the new Cinemizer Plus, which will be presented by Carl Zeiss AG at CeBIT 2010.

Optically, the mobile 3D cinema is reminiscent of a pair of thick sunglasses. The personal cinema experience can be connected to iPods and iPhones as well as other video sources such as cell phones, Playstations (PS2/PS3), and DVD players. The perfect cinema feeling is provided by the simulation of a big screen two meters in front of the viewer with an image size of 45 inches. Both 2D and 3D video data can be played on the glasses. When a vehicle is not being used, it saves energy in its battery and can, if required, feed this back into the supply grid.

Infosys Technologies Ltd kündigte heute die Veröffentlichung zweier wichtiger Berichte über Innovationen bei Banken an, die aus Umfragen unter Bankenchefs in den USA und Europa erstellt wurden.

Des Weiteren sind knapp neun von zehn Befragten der Ansicht, dass der IT-Bereich in Bezug auf die Innovationsbemühungen extrem oder sehr wichtig sein wird.

COMPUTERBILD-Test: Programme zur automatischen Treiber-Aktualisierung sind "mangelhaft" / Miserable Treibersuche im Internet / Teilweise USB-Anschlüsse nach Update lahmgelegt

Wenn der Drucker nur Streifen druckt, das neue Spiel Grafikfehler produziert oder der Brenner neue Rohlinge im Schneckentempo beschreibt, liegt es oft an einem fehlerhaften Gerätetreiber. Dann schafft meist ein neuer Treiber Abhilfe. Aktuelle Treiber kann jeder Computerbesitzer selbst im Internet suchen und installieren. Automatisch und damit bequemer soll es mit Treiber-Aktualisierungsprogrammen funktionieren. COMPUTERBILD hat fünf dieser Spezialprogramme getestet (Heft 18/2009, ab Montag im Handel).

Am Computer angeschlossene Hardware wie Drucker, Scanner oder Grafikkarte funktioniert nur, wenn sie die richtigen Befehle erhält. Weil sich die Befehle je nach Gerät, oft sogar je nach Modell eines einzigen Herstellers unterscheiden, benötigt jedes Gerät einen passenden Treiber. Spezielle Treiber-Aktualisierungsprogramme sollen diese passgenau im Internet aufspüren und anschließend auf dem PC oder Notebook installieren.

Das funktionierte mit den von COMPUTERBILD getesteten Programmen allerdings so gut wie gar nicht: Von möglichen 61 Treibern im Test fanden die Kandidaten im Schnitt gerade mal knapp zwölf. Schlusslicht ist der kostenlose Automatic Update Client mit lediglich vier Treffern. Selbst das beste Suchergebnis ist noch miserabel: 18 aktualisierte Treiber schafft Driver Detective im Test - für knapp 25 Euro deutlich zu wenig.

Als Konsequenz der erfolglosen Suche wurden alle fünf Programme auf "mangelhaft" abgewertet. Von Drivermax 5 Pro (27 Euro) ist nicht nur wegen der schlechten Suchergebnisse abzuraten: Wurde die Software doch mal fündig, funktionierten nach der Aktualisierung die USB-Anschlüsse einiger Test-PCs nicht mehr.

Wer neue Treiber benötigt, sollte lieber selbst aktiv werden und auf den Internetseiten der Hardware-Hersteller die aktuellsten Versionen runterladen. Vorsicht: Ein falscher Treiber kann im schlimmsten Fall den ganzen PC lahmlegen. Deshalb sollten Nutzer vor der Installation besser eine Komplettsicherung des Systems erstellen.

Crack-free concrete

During HANNOVER MESSE 2009, a new radio sensor that can prevent cracks forming in fresh concrete is taking center stage at the stand run by Leipzig University of Technology, Commerce and Culture.

The motivation behind this new development is the all-too-commonplace problem of cracking, which can occur in large concrete parts during the first few hours after production. The cracks are caused by a capillary vacuum in the liquid phase, which develops during the drying process. The newly developed radio sensor measures this vacuum continuously. When linked to a misting device, the concrete can be dampened when critical pressure values are reached, thus counteracting the vacuum. Thanks to real-time measurement with the new sensor, only the precise volume of water needed to prevent cracking is applied to the concrete surface.

Using technology to keep an overview

Companies that want to know where their staff are currently working or where a particular product is located - and therefore need a system that delivers excellent reliability for logistical procedures - should take a closer look at the wireless location system from the Chemnitz-based developers.

As a stable alternative to RFID and GPS that is based on the Nano LOC TRX transceiver from Nanotron Technologies, this robust chip radio technology uses the 2.4 GHz band range. The wireless location system can be integrated seamlessly into existing infrastructures and business processes using a conventional Ethernet interface. Mobile tags in the radio network - where anchor nodes and gateways provide static points of reference - allow positions to be pinpointed to within 50 centimeters. To maintain such a high degree of precision, the anchors should be no more than 500 meters apart outdoors, and should keep to a grid of 20 to 50 meters indoors.

The stuff of dreams for designer hi-fi owners is becoming a reality for users of machine tools and filling machines - the contactless transfer of electrical energy. A small but efficient team of engineers from MESA Systemtechnik in Konstanz (Germany) has used cutting-edge methods to develop the "Inpud-CAN 120" system, an inductive power and data transfer system for CAN-bus. And this innovation is on show at HANNOVER MESSE 2009.

"Inpud-CAN 120" is designed to supply power to sensors, actuators and other consumers on the rotating shafts, axles and pallets of various devices and machines - such as robots, packaging machines and vehicles. It is also ideal for extreme environments that suffer from dust, water and oil.

CAN-bus information reaches its destination without interference via an air gap. What's more, the engineers at MESA claim this system has no maintenance requirements, since the contactless technology is free from mechanical stress.

Minor programming error - major production problem

Even very minor programming errors can have serious consequences for production - such as recurring faults in a car part. Often, the quality problems are discovered far too late and the causes cannot be properly diagnosed and localized. At HANNOVER MESSE 2009 (the Hannover Fair, 20 to 24 April), the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing (IITB) is showcasing "PRODAMI" software, which enables the rapid detection and resolution of just such faults.

Employees can use this brand new tool to monitor and control plants in almost real time. The system is based on data mining tools, which can search large volumes of data in next to no time and identify characteristic data patterns within a vast range of production and sensor information. Although data mining methods have already been used successfully for applications in areas such as marketing, financial planning and gene research, they have rarely been implemented in production, as it has so far proven impossible to evaluate data in real time. However, "PRODAMI" is set to change all that and remove the final obstacles to its use in production plants.

An eBook for sunny days

If Foxit Software has its way, instead of whiling away a long train journey with a book or newspaper we will soon be whipping out the eSlick - a new eBook reader being exhibited by the company at CeBIT 2009.

The really special feature of this innovation is its use of ePaper technology. This gives the eSlick a high-contrast black and white display that looks exactly like real paper and is just as easy to read. As a result, legibility is not affected either by the light conditions or the angle at which the device is being viewed. Text remains clearly legible, even in direct sunlight.

Thanks to eInk technology, the eSlick does not require any energy to display a page, only to move on to the next one. As a result, up to 8,000 pages can be read from beginning to end before having to recharge the battery.

Weighing in at just 180 grams and at just 1 centimeter thick, the eSlick is thinner and lighter than a standard paperback. Thanks to a special pdf creator, entire newspapers, magazines and books can be loaded onto the eSlick at the touch of a button.

This device converts printable documents (for example in txt, ppt, doc, xls or html format) into a pdf that can be downloaded in less than a minute. The pre-installed Foxit Reader reads the loaded pdf documents and the display can be adjusted from 50% to 400%. An integrated MP3 player provides an accompanying soundtrack if the relevant music files are saved on the eSlick via USB.

A digital memory for products

If products had a memory, they could do things such as tell freight companies that they should be handled with care. This may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but visitors to CeBIT 2009 can witness such "miracles" and many more like them at the live presentation of the SemProM (Semantic Product Memory).

Highly miniaturized embedded elements, RFID technology, instrumented environments and intelligent sensor networks create the technological basis for providing products with a memory. The information in the memory can be used throughout the product's life - from the manufacturing process to the end user.

For example, a robot can read RFID tags providing details on size, weight and lifting points to facilitate the handling of non-uniform bulk items. Used in conjunction with object recognition technology and camera-assisted manipulation control, this enables the robot to expertly grasp items of all shapes and sizes.

Among the digital memory's features that users can take advantage of is a reader that displays data stored in barcode or RFID form in large text. What's more, technical jargon such as E306 (vitamin E) is rendered in a form that is easy to understand.

Quicker processes and lower costs - the online pen being unveiled by T-Systems at CeBIT 2009 converts handwritten notes directly into digital data that is transmitted to central company servers by Bluetooth and cellphone technology.

This system is useful for tasks such as getting contracts signed. Online signatures will speed up business transactions in future. A number of other applications are also conceivable. For example, visitors to CeBIT 2009 can print out PowerPoint slides, write additions on printouts by hand and see the changes incorporated in the electronic version in real time.

Notes written on printouts can even be sent via e-mail. T-Systems is offering this new-generation pen in a package that includes printer software, integration, a service desk and hosting.

The fact that computers continue using electricity unless you actually unplug them is a long-standing problem. Taking such a drastic measure has a great many drawbacks, such as making it impossible for system administrators to install updates overnight. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will be demonstrating a solution to this problem with a world premiere at CeBIT 2009 - the first 0-watt computer that uses no power in standby mode.

The saving for a single PC may not appear to be that great at first glance, but the team at Fujitsu Siemens Computers sees it as its global responsibility to manufacture such a computer if it is technically feasible.

The company has an ongoing commitment to green IT and takes environmental protection very seriously. And although the saving for an individual PC is relatively small, the 0-watt computer is definitely a worthwhile undertaking given the huge future demand for computers.

Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn-Präsident, Axel Schmiegelow, CEO von sevenload, Marco Börries, Connected-Life-Chef bei Yahoo und Werner Vogels, Vizepräsident von Amazon stellen ihre Thesen vor. Mit ihren Vorträgen bleiben die Experten leider an der Oberfläche.

Sind soziale Netzwerke ein vorübergehendes Phänomen? Nein, sagt Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn-Präsident, denn soziale Kontakte gibt es nicht erst seit dem Internet - jetzt sind sie elektronisch. Für Unternehmen bedeute das Web 2.0, dass sie Informationen mit Menschen außerhalb ihrer Firewall teilen sollten, denn auch dort seien wichtige Experten zu finden.

"Wenn Unternehmen Fachwissen außerhalb ihrer Firma nutzen, können sie sich im Wettbewerb besser behaupten," so Hoffman. Soziale Netzwerke helfen, im Informationsüberfluss die richtigen Nachrichten herauszufiltern und die richtigen Personen zu finden. "Die Frage ist nicht, ob Firmen sie nutzen werden, sondern nur wann."

Axel Schmiegelow, CEO von sevenload, spricht von einem Paradigmenwechsel: "Social Media sind die Zukunft." Erst der Austausch mache Inhalte wertvoll. "Früher hat man sich mit Freunden über einen Film unterhalten, nachdem man ihn gesehen hat - online passiert das gleichzeitig. Das finde ich aufregend", sagt Schmiegelow. Das Internet habe inzwischen alle Menschen erfasst, nicht nur Computer affine Kids.

"Wir kommen aus einer Welt, in der das Fernsehprogramm vorgegeben war - im Internet sucht sich der User seinen Inhalt selbst."

Die Herausforderungen besteht Schmiegelow zufolge darin, Social Media zu finanzieren. Derzeit setzt er auf Werbung: Über das Internet sei es möglich, die Gefühle, die TV-Werbung weckt, für ein Zehntel des Preises im Internet mit Videowerbung zu wecken. "Nicht das Medium zählt, sondern die Situation, in der ich es benutze - sei es in der Arbeit, unterwegs oder in der Freizeit." Das klassische Fernsehen werde verschwinden, "aber das heißt nicht, dass die Firmen, die heute TV machen, nicht dennoch in anderer Form überleben."

Cloud-Computing war das Thema von Werner Vogels, Vice President von Amazon. Serverleistung online als Service mieten können, sei gerade für junge Firmen entscheidend, die noch gar nicht abschätzen können, wie ihre Produkte bei den Usern ankommen. "Bei Amazon bekommen sie Server innerhalb von Minuten", so Vogels.

Marco Börries, der bei Yahoo fürs mobile Internet zuständig ist, das Internetportal jedoch bald verlassen wird, sieht die Zukunft in der Kombination zwei starker Bereiche: dem Mobilfunk und dem Internet. "Das Internet hat mein Leben verändert - und jetzt wird es mobil", sagt Börries. "In Verbindung zu bleiben ist heute das Wichtigste." Umsatz sei - jenseits der Netzbetrieber - beim mobilen Internet nur über Werbung zu generieren. "Da sind wir noch ganz am Anfang."

Light as a feather and packed full of technology - the new hard disk

The memory experts Transcend will be presenting an external 1.8 inch SSD hard disk at CeBIT 2009. The SSD18M mobile memory device is equipped with an eSATA and a USB-2.0 interface. The module has dimensions of only 80x50x12.5 millimeters and weighs only 50 grams. When reading it can attain speeds of 90 MB per second, and 50 MB per second when writing.

The SSD memory is connected to a PC by USB. In contrast to traditional hard disks, it has no moving parts, operates more quickly, uses less energy and is not sensitive to shocks. The reason - with SSDs the data is stored on memory chips rather than on magnetic discs.

Long life and extremely high energy efficiency: both these benefits are combined in the K10 projector, which Acer is displaying at CeBIT 2009. The 13 x 12 cm mini projector provides a brightness of 100 ANSI lumens which gives clear and detailed images with a diagonal of up to 152 cm, making it ideal for smaller rooms such as a manger's office.

The Acer K10 Pico projector, with its LED technology, is a real green IT product. There is practically no need to ever replace the lamp as the LEDs have an effective life of up to 20,000 hours. Furthermore, projectors with LED technology require up to 30% less energy than devices with conventional lamps because they generate less heat.

The reduced need for cooling also enables a reduction in the overall size of the device. For environmentally conscious users there is another reason to be pleased: the production of LEDs requires no harmful substances, such as mercury or halides, in contrast to the production process for conventional lamps.

Master off switch: no chance for secret power gluttons

Who doesn't recognize the scenario: as soon as the front door has closed behind you, the doubts begin to creep in….did I turn the iron off? Is the television still on perhaps? This stress can be put to an end once and for all. At CeBIT 2009, digitalSTROM.org presents a new technology that provides greater security and lower energy consumption.

A small chip, not even the size of a finger nail, makes it all possible. The chip connects all the electrical devices via the existing electricity network and enables them to be controlled with traditional switches. When leaving the house a "master off switch", which can be placed on any number of power sockets, allows the whole house to be placed in standby mode.

In theory, each individual electrical device can be equipped with a digitalSTROM-Chip. The system also measures energy consumption right down to individual appliance level. A simple traffic light system or analysis on a computer shows if energy consumption is above average. This means that a faulty refrigerator seal can be detected as rapidly as a dripping tap.

NEPOMUK enables computers to think like humans

In the NEPOMUK project, scientists from the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) have given computers a human-like capacity to remember, as they will now demonstrate at CeBIT 2009.
Some background to the new development: imagine that you hear an interesting lecture by Mr. Müller from the company XY, in which he talks about the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence. The next time you meet Mr. Müller you can probably still remember his talk well even if you have perhaps forgotten his name. This partial memory is possible as humans think associatively and intuitively handle relationships between information. The human brain connects individual elements that it perceives at the same time and is thus in a position to associate conference proceedings with speakers or dates, for example.

In the NEPOMUK project, a procedure has now been developed that uses semantic technology to support personal information management. The knowledge concealed in the folder structure and file contents of the personal computer is first transferred automatically to a "personal information model".

For example, e-mails are linked with contact data and images on the hard disk. Users can adapt this model at any time to suit their personal preferences and ways of thinking. The resulting associations created between information and concepts are used for storage and search operations: for storage, content analysis algorithms make proposals regarding how new documents are to be added to the existing personal folder system; if documents are searched for later on but the image of the contact person is all that is remembered then the semantic network that has been developed can help find the correct documents again.

Satellite TV with HD quality straight from the socket

Until now, receiving digital TV via a satellite dish required the laborious laying of coaxial cables through the house or apartment. The presentation of dLAN TV Sat Welt at CeBIT 2009 signals an end to this cable spaghetti as the new satellite receiver routes TV images via the domestic electricity wires from the satellite dish to the TV. As a result, the receiver only needs to be connected to the satellite system and the nearest power socket. An adapter in the socket on the television then brings the data to the screen.

The dLAN TV Sat Receiver supplies digital satellite television in HD quality. An HDMI port provides optimal signal transmission and analogue televisions can be connected via SCART. A CI module allows smart cards to be inserted in order to be able to receive encrypted channels.

Optimal surround sound is provided by the digital port alongside the analogue audio outputs. The integrated, EPG controlled recording function saves videos directly to an external USB or eSATA hard disk. If two receivers are being used on a Twin-LNB then the dLAN TV Sat Receiver can record one program in parallel to showing another TV channel.

A well rounded burner

Regardless of whether you want to burn a DVD with a speed of 24x, apply a label to the DVD or securely erase data from it, users can soon turn to a single appliance: the iHAS624 burner, which will be presented by PLDS at CeBIT 2009.

One interesting feature of the new DVD burner is the LabelTag, which allows circular printing on the data side of a DVD±R disc. During the burning process the user can burn a short text or a small image at the same time as the data, without having to interrupt the burning process, rotate the disc or use special software.

The burning speed is not reduced at all in the process. Special media are not required as printing with LabelTag is possible with standard DVD±R discs.

The burner is also equipped with the SmartErase feature. This enables complete deletion of data that has been stored on DVD±R and CD-R media. The iHAS624 has an S-ATA port, which provides high levels of performance and compatibility. It should be noted, however, that the maximum 24x burning speed available for DVD±Rs can only be achieved with certified discs.

Put your office in your jacket pocket - this is the invitation issued by T-Systems at CeBIT 2009 to everyone that wants to have their own personal desktop with them at all times and everywhere they go. The USB stick "My Access Key" makes it possible.

The miniaturized office supports mobile working in two ways: it can either act as the platform for the most important programs, effectively working autonomously like a sort of PC, or it enables secure access to a personal desktop and all programs maintained in a computer center.

This access is provided by a secure Internet connection and can be made from anywhere as long as the terminal used is connected to the Internet. Particular high security is provided by a combination of a card, a PIN and the personal voice of the user.

If the user provides authentication via the My Access Key with a card and password for the system in the computer center, the solution then calls the user back by telephone and provides access to applications and data once it has recognized the user's voice pattern.

If in future you would like to keep your satnav device in place but still have a completely unobstructed view through the windshield, just stick a donut on your dashboard. Of course, we do not mean a real American donut, we mean the Dashboard Donut from Adapt-Mobile Ltd. To be able to better estimate and therefore optimize the consumption of resources, Alcatel-Lucent will be presenting Smart Metering at CeBIT 2009 - providing intelligent electricity, gas and water meters that are integrated into a networked communication and accounting system.
Digital meters with a bidirectional connection to the energy supplier's IT form the basis of Smart Metering. The connection is permanent and the resulting transparency should benefit the environment as well as all participants in the scheme. For example, individuals could carry out certain tasks, like washing and drying their laundry, during off-peak times. Hence customers could take advantage of the particularly low rates charged during these periods. 3D display responds to each and every finger cue

Visitors to CeBIT 2009 will be able to experience science-fiction live with the iPoint 3D from the experts at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut HHI. The main highlight of the 3D display is the ability to communicate with it through simple hand gestures: movement of the elements depicted on the display is contactless and there is no need for 3D glasses or data gloves.

The iPoint 3D is able to respond to finger cues thanks to a recognition device not much larger than a keyboard which can be suspended from the ceiling above the user or fitted in a coffee table. Two built-in cameras detect hands and fingers in real time and transmit the information to a computer. As soon as the user stands in front of the screen and waves his/her hands, the system responds - the system is completely contactless and markerless.

The iPoint 3D is a lot of fun, but in the future the system could be used in more serious scenarios where there can be no contact between the user and the computer, for example in operating theaters. Private use is also a possibility: while you knead dough in the kitchen, you can give a finger command to the iPoint 3D to turn the heat down on the potatoes that are boiling over - no need to get the stove dirty doing it manually!

Robust computer for rugged work

Rugged cell phones are completely out of fashion now, but robust computers are in. At CeBIT 2009, Andres Industries will be presenting its "ruggedized" PDA: the device can survive a fall into water or being dropped from one meter onto concrete, plus it has a fingerprint scanner and a 7-inch touch display.

A GPS navigation system, UMTS, GRPS, Edge, WLAN and Bluetooth are, of course, also on board. The device is intended for use in land surveying, georesearch and forestry - basically anywhere where work is conducted in tough environments. Always working to capacity: virtualization techniques optimize computer centers

Virtualization technologies, which allow several applications to be operated together on powerful hardware, increase the energy efficiency of computer centers and therefore make an important contribution to the field of Green IT.

OFFIS, the Oldenburg-based Institute for Computer Science, will be demonstrating at CeBIT 2009 how implementation of this technology may look.

Virtualization can resolve the classic conflict whereby in times of high utilization, sufficient computing capacity must be available, but having that amount of computing capacity during low load periods leads to energy wastage. In this respect, dynamic virtualization solutions provide additional potential savings.

During preliminary research projects, OFFIS identified algorithms for analyzing and predicting server behavior, for dynamic planning and for evaluating computed solutions. Transferred to commercial products, the findings and concepts of the Oldenburg-based computer scientists may be used in computer centers in the future.

More projects are to be carried out in close collaboration with industrial enterprises.

He who sow bugs can find errors

Obviously, new computer programs have to be tested. But who tests the tests? Scientists at Saarland University do! Or rather, they have developed an appropriate test procedure to do this and they will be presenting it at CeBIT 2009.

The principle of the innovation is as follows: the tool generates errors all day (the kind of errors programmers may make) and then checks whether the test managed to find them. Basically, a good program test should detect all errors. But, if it does not detect the mock errors, then it will also overlook real errors that actually exist.

This is called 'mutation testing'. It was first used 30 years ago but until now its application has been limited to very small programs of a hundred lines or less. The procedure developed by the Saarland University scientists, however, tests programs a thousand times that size - right through to large, commercial Java applications.

Intelligent infrastructure helps manage massive amounts of data

Global networking produces massive amounts of data and this is a trend that is growing rapidly. Processing and archiving the flow of all this information requires a new, dynamic infrastructure. At CeBIT 2009, IBM will be presenting a range of software products and services designed to solve this problem.

This portfolio includes the IBM "ProtecTIER" solution, a de-duplication appliance that identifies and eliminates redundant data and reduces it to a single version. In addition, the new "XIV" storage system allows fast access to the relevant information for both traditional applications in finance and health care as well as for digital media and Web 2.0 content, even with the current huge growth in data volumes.

With the "XIV", customers can significantly reduce the cost of data management. In addition, IBM will be presenting storage solutions with automatic data encryption that enable secure management of information. To this end, IBM provides tape drives, but is now extending this technology to disk systems too.

On-board computer projects information onto the windshield

Information about navigation, traffic jams and road conditions, as well as lane change assistance and warnings regarding the presence of pedestrians or cyclists in the blind spot - with the help of on-board computers, navigation systems, sensors and cameras, motorists now have a whole host of information available to help them have a safe journey. But how can all this information be displayed without distracting the driver's attention from the traffic?

Scientists at the Chemnitz University of Technology intend to resolve this question at CeBIT 2009 with their newly developed LED display, which works like a monitor in the lower edge of the windscreen.

The display consists of nine modules, each equipped with 256 light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Each individual LED can display 27 colors and grayscale in eight levels of brightness. Warnings are therefore displayed in the form of symbols.

So, for the driver, the warning regarding the presence of a pedestrian, for example, is more tangible because it is easier to gauge the position as the carriageway edges are also displayed at the same time. And the nearer the vehicle gets to the pedestrian, the bigger the warning symbol becomes.

For cool computers: well water keeps computer centre at the right temperature

Only a few computer center operators could identify the biggest energy guzzler in computer center and tell you how much energy it really consumes. Their credibility is thus at risk when they want to implement ecological concepts and talk about Green IT. To learn more about a tool that can help efficiently control energy consumption and to pick up some practical advice on reducing energy costs, visit bit GmbH at CeBIT 2009 in Hannover.

Amongst other things, bit will be presenting a new form of computer centre cooling, whereby energy consumption is significantly reduced through the use of a well system. Groundwater at approximately 10 degrees Celsius is obtained from a draw-well and used for cooling the computer center.

Afterwards, it is fed back, at approx. 15 degrees Celsius, into a recharge well and hence returned to the groundwater table. This small temperature difference is large enough to supply cold water based air conditioning systems with sufficient cooling power and thus save money. On average, compared with a conventional cold water based air conditioning system, a return on investment will be achieved within two years.

Digital life on any device

Sending your vacation photos wirelessly from your digital camera to the large-format TV screen; playing music from your home computer on the stereo system in your living room; watching movies on your handheld game console and using your cellphone as a universal remote control: This is all possible, according to the Digital Living Network Alliance.

Or at least, that is the goal of this alliance of leading manufacturers of multimedia devices. Integrating digital television into the home network however had not been on the agenda until now. But communications engineers at the University of Saarland are aiming to change all that and are presenting an astonishing new solution at CeBIT 2009: A new software architecture which supports the wireless transmission of digital TV.

A little background: Internet Protocol can already be used to distribute digital media like music, movies and photos to various end devices, without requiring any special pre-configuration by the user. Radio and TV content remained the exception up to now, because in contrast to stored media file, they have to be transmitted under strict delay constraints.

Otherwise, when the user changes TV programs, he or she will experience delays or video distortion. The communications engineers at the University of Saarland have developed a new protocol which handles error recovery and the delay behavior of the Internet in a new and different way: Independent of the transmission channel, they can now send the media data in optimum quality to the receiver.

Computers go green

Is standby mode good enough or should you power it down? Is powering it down enough, or should you also pull the plug? How can you help the environment and reduce your electricity bill at the same time? The answer: with a green PC - for example, one from Christmanns TEO-X series, being presented at CeBIT 2009.

TEO stands for "Thin Economic Office", which in turn stands for an energy-efficient, flexible PC. Which also looks great: The cube-shaped TEO-X computers come in brassy colors and are only around 6 cm high. According to the manufacturer, they consume a maximum of 25 watts. This new PC series offers numerous extension options, for example using PCI cards. The system can be extended to include an additional network card, a sound card, WLAN, Bluetooth and other interfaces.

GPS tracker protects bikers' pride and joy

Its name, the R-35W Waterproof GPS Tracker, doesn't sound all that spectacular. But motorcycle enthusiasts attending CeBIT 2009 will still definitely want to make a visit to the stand of Arknav International. That's because, once your bike is outfitted with the R-35W, thieves won't stand a chance.

The waterproof R-35W device, which functions without an external energy source, has a GPS transmitter which allows for the precise localization of the motorbike it is mounted on. If a thief is already underway with the stolen bike, the owner of the R-35W can send a text message to the tracker to have it turn the motor off. And if the thief should happen to detect the R-35W and attempt to disable it, this is also to no avail, since the tracker then also alerts the owner.

Precision facial analysis recognizes 30,000 characteristics

Emotions are often difficult to hide. Anyone who carefully observes the facial expressions of their conversation partner can often notice whether this person is actually telling the truth or is merely trying to be polite. This is precisely the principle on which the SHORE™ analytic software from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS), featured at CeBIT 2009, is based.

Market researchers and advertising psychologists are interested in finding out the impact of posters, store windows or advertising spots on test persons. A small digital camera takes their picture repeatedly while they are watching one of the above items. The analytic software then analyzes their facial expressions.

The system is able to recognize more than 30,000 automatically "learned" features in every image of a person's face. It then compares things like facial contours, eye shape and color, eyebrows, mouth and nose. The software can "memorize" a face after 30 seconds and is able to recognize whether it has already seen this face before.

Future development plans for the software include being able to test whether adults or children are interested in a particular product or functioning as an image recognition device for photo archives.

People who prefer to see who the caller is before answering the phone will love the new "AEG Cromo 3400" DECT cordless telephone being presented by the ITM Technology company at CeBIT 2009. Instead of just showing the caller's name or number, the phone's 3.5-inch screen actually displays a photo of the person calling. Here's how it works: The phone allows you to link photos in JPEG format to up to 200 different phone numbers. Anytime one of those 200 people calls, the "AEG Cromo 3400" automatically displays his or her image.

This product innovation also offers all the convenience of a state-of-the-art DECT phone - such as lit display, freely selectable, polyphonic ring tones, display of call duration and redial function. The product developers also attached great importance to energy conservation as well as vastly lower radiation: When resting in the base station, the AEG phone emits up to 99 percent less radiation than conventional models designed without radiation reduction functionality.

Visitors may well rub their eyes if they catch the demonstration of the latest development from Götting KG being shown at CeBIT 2009: a small Smart driving around the open-air area being pursued by a huge truck. A driverless truck! But onlookers need not worry. The demonstration they are witnessing is not a scene from a horror movie, but rather an automatic convoy.

This innovative convoy works as follows: just like driverless concept cars the vehicles in the convoy are fitted with numerous sensors. However, obstacle detectors are redundant because the driver in the car heading the convoy leads the way. Not being tied to fixed routes gives the convoy added flexibility.

The Hasso Plattner Institutes in Germany and USA have set up a novel innovations lab at CeBIT 2009 under the motto "Giving IT a more human touch".

This extraordinary powerhouse for new ideas is designed to generate novel, purpose-oriented solutions on a daily basis in response to the challenges posed by Webciety, IT security, green IT, eLearning, eGovernment and eHealth. The real showstopper here: visitors are invited to take part and learn how fresh new ideas for user-friendly products and services are developed.

Webciety is the topic on the first day of the show. Scientists and students seek answers to the question "How can we reduce the stress on professionals in the 'always-on' age?" IT security is the theme for the following day, formulated in the question "How can we help employees at the workplace maintain the privacy of their own data?"

On Thursday 5 March the focus of attention is on green information technology and generating ways to animate private households to use environmental-friendly IT solutions. CeBIT 2009 It's a kind of "Magic": Vodafone presents its Google G2 mobile phone

Android is slowly coming up to speed: following T-Mobile's adoption of the new Google mobile phone operating system in its G1 cellular phone, now Vodafone is launching the follow-up model - the G2 Magic - on the market in time for CeBIT 2009.

Like its predecessor it uses the Android operating system - designed for a mobile phone alliance of some 40 companies around the world. Taiwan-based HTC is the manufacturer. The G2 Magic is operated using the 3.2 inch touchscreen and a navigation wheel.

The sliding keyboard has been dropped to make the unit slimmer and lighter. The cellular phone features a 3.2 megapixel camera and direct access to Google services, such as e-mail, maps and search engine, on the menu.

CeBIT 2009 Conserving fuel with your navigator

EcoNavigation is the name of the new software package that Garmin is launching to make its range of nüvi navigators genuine fuel savers. The company is demonstrating how this works at CeBIT 2009.
The fuel-conscious driver enters the car's consumption data and the current price of fuel in the car profile. The EcoNavigation uses this data as the basis for calculating the savings, which can be read out even before starting the journey. In addition to the conventional fastest time and shortest route calculations, the EcoNavigation offers the nüvi owner a new fuel-saving route option. In this case, the software works out the route that saves the most fuel.

Other functions in EcoNavigation package: a consumption report that informs the driver about fuel consumption over a given period. A route report, on the other hand, provides info on distance traveled and consumption per route.

The new software also keeps the driver updated while on the road. If he feels in the mood the driver can activate the EcoChallenge feature. Based on an analysis of the driver's heavy or light-footed pedal technique and braking behavior as well as the actual car speed the display shows how well the driver is doing in the fuel-saving stakes.

EcoNavigation is available for free download from the beginning of March for all nüvi 2x5 series and nüvi 7x5 series navigators. All new nüvi navigators come with the new package on board.

CeBIT 2009 The biggest printout in the world - on your way to the car

15.5 trillion ink drops on 7,000 m² of normal office paper will add up to the world's largest printout - this is how PrintDreams is demonstrating the performance of its printers at CeBIT 2009.

The individual parts of the printout were printed with the Bluetooth PrintBrush mini-printer. With the user gradually guiding the mobile-phone-sized inkjet printer over the page, the handheld wizard can print text and graphics on A4-size sheets.

Thanks to Random Movement Printing Technology (RMPT), the inkjet printer keeps its cool even if the user jerks his hand or suddenly changes direction. Because of its enormous size - and because, according to the manufacturer, the monster printout is best seen half a kilometer away - the printout is being exhibited at parking lot 6H, close to the ADAC Driving Safety Center in Hermann Fuller Strasse.

Digital memory in products helps with purchasing decisions

The intelligent bottle of champagne knows at which temperature the bubbly tastes best. The intelligent medicine cupboard lets its users know when they last took their medication and when the next tablet needs to be taken. It is these kinds of digital memory applications that the Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI - German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence) works with, and it will be presenting the first findings from its 'Sem Pro M - Semantic Product Memory' research project at CeBIT 2009.

Miniaturized elements that are integrated into various everyday items and which cannot be seen from the outside form the technical basis for digital product memory technology. Via direct interaction with the digital product memory, CeBIT visitors will have the opportunity to follow the life cycle of an individually configured sample product, beginning with its production and continuing, via various logistical processes, all the way to its use by the end consumer. Another application example demonstrates how a customer can find out about and assess the ingredients of a product.

When the product is placed on the reader unit of the memory browser the object is first identified and then the system uses the semantic representation of its memory contents to make the contents understandable for the user, via its 'semantic product magnifying glass'.

With this information, the consumer can view the production path, the ingredients and the storage of foodstuffs, for example. In this way, declarations such as 'E306' come with the explanation 'Vitamin E' and information about whether the ingredient is classed as a potential allergen.

Accurate 3D scanning even at home

Representing a sculpture three dimensionally is no problem at all with the laser scanner from David Visions Systems. The scanner, which is a complete set, is hand-held and the laser line can simply be directed across the object or surface that is to be scanned. The device then generates a 3D model for presentation on a PC, and the recording has a fine resolution that can illustrate surface details smaller than 0.2 millimeters.

The user can simply scan each side of an object individually. The software included in the set will then automatically mesh the scans in order to generate a complete, textured model. The resulting model can be stored and used in a range of standard 3D formats, such as OBJ, STL and PLY.

The potential areas of application are almost limitless. The manufacturer states that this innovation, which will be presented at CeBIT 2009, is ideal for computer animations, games, virtual 3D environments, works of art, product presentations and archaeology. According to the manufacturer, its ease of use and attractive price means it is also suited for private users.

A small, compact battery with USB interface makes charger units redundant. This new battery from Gembird GmbH in Soest, Germany, is simply and easily charged using a PC or notebook USB port. These AA-size batteries have a hinged crown which can be opened to access the USB port. No charger is needed to recharge the battery. Gembird will show how this works at CeBIT 2009.

To recharge the battery, you simply plug its USB port into a PC or notebook computer. These batteries are designed to take the place of conventional, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, thus reducing the volume of e-waste and making mobile computing more environmentally friendly.

Additional technical information cited by the manufacturer includes a 1.2 V power rating, 1,500 mAh capacity based on NiMH battery technology and a battery charge status indicator. Charging via the USB port takes up to five hours. The standard AA-size battery weighs 21 grams.
